History

Sordo Giovanni Winery is a family-owned estate with more than 100 years of history. Founded in 1912 by Giuseppe Sordo, the winery reached a turning point under the leadership of his son Giovanni and his wife Maria, who acquired several prestigious Nebbiolo vineyards to produce Barolo from some of the finest vineyard sites in the regionThe winery is located in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto, and the estate covers 53 hectares across the Langhe and Roero areas. Its vineyards are situated in the municipalities of Castiglione Falletto, Serralunga d'Alba, Novello, Monforte d'Alba, La Morra, Verduno, and Grinzane Cavour.

People

The Sordo winery was founded in 1912, when Giuseppe Sordo began cultivating vineyards and producing wine in the small hamlet of Garbelletto, in Castiglione Falletto. A major turning point came with Giuseppe's son, Giovanni Sordo. Together with his wife Maria—the historical heart and memory of the winery—Giovanni expanded the estate during the 1960s, enlarging the cellar, building the current fermentation hall, and creating the first barrel cellar dedicated exclusively to the ageing of Barolo. Following Giovanni's untimely passing in 2001, his son Giorgio took over the management of the winery. Under Giorgio's leadership, the winery was further expanded, including the construction of an underground cellar carved more than 12 metres into the hillside, providing ideal conditions for the barrel ageing of Barolo. Today, the fourth generation is represented by Paola, born in 1999, Giorgio's daughter, who proudly and passionately carries on the family's winemaking tradition.

Vineyards

The estate's vineyards are planted predominantly on deep, compact calcareous marl soils. Combined with the distinctive microclimate of the Langhe, these conditions provide the ideal environment for cultivating Nebbiolo. The vineyards are managed with great respect for nature. Cover crops, including grasses and other plant species, are sown between the vine rows and incorporated into the soil as green manure, helping to maintain biodiversity, improve soil health, and promote sustainable vineyard management.

Wines

The winery is unique in producing **nine Barolo Crus** (Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva – MGA), each expressing the distinctive character of one of the Langhe's most prestigious vineyard sites: Monvigliero (Verduno), Ravera (Novello), Perno (Monforte d'Alba), Gabutti (Serralunga d'Alba), La Serra (La Morra), Parussi (Castiglione Falletto), Rocche di Castiglione (Castiglione Falletto), Villero (Castiglione Falletto), Monprivato (Castiglione Falletto)
In addition to its Barolo collection, the winery produces a wide range of wines, including Arneis, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Verduno Pelaverga, and Timorasso.
